Threadless.com has long been considered a homegrown internet success story.
Not surprisingly, when the user-generated t-shirt design company recently opened its first brick and mortar retail store, they chose hometown Chicago.
The slick, uncluttered design of the shop is perfect for a company that made its name on the web – there are lots of LCD monitors displaying information about the merchandise as well as user comments. Customers can also access the Threadless website from the store and even post their purchases online with the guest webcam.
Although the Lakeview outpost does not stock every product available online (since there are thousands of designs, and members of the Threadless community are constantly uploading new styles, this would be virtually impossible), the store still manages to echo the site’s innovative feel. There is even a second floor gallery featuring the artwork of the company’s most popular designers.
But shoppers have to act fast. Since everything is quite inexpensive ($10-15 for a shirt or tote bag, $40 for a hoodie) and the merchandise rotates out every Saturday, the store has an incredibly high turnover rate.
