Be it bangles, brooches or bracelets, local jewelry designer Sara Lenart has the gem for the occasion – even if the occasion is little more than brunch with friends.
The Chicago jewelry designer combines a background in silversmithing and gemology to create her signature look: clusters of glittering colored stones or pendant-sized pieces that somehow manage to look understated and delicate.
"Most of it is very simple," says Lenart. "Because when I used to look for things, I could never find simple." It's a somewhat modest description; Lenart focuses on the intricate beauty of the stones, each one hand-picked from various dealers.
Many of her pieces feature small, teardrop-shaped, multifaceted cuts in pale colors that reflect the light in ways that are subtly mesmerizing. Larger stones are often showcased as pendants or oversized rings that really let the intricacies of the elements, such as swirling rock patterns, shine through.
Lenart opened her own shop in June 2004, and has garnered a fair amount of national and local press for her work. Still, her prices remain reasonable and there are a fair amount of smaller items for less than $30. But costs can climb depending on the type of stone featured. Though Lenart works primarily in silver, she has begun adding in some gold settings as their popularity has increased.
She also specializes in custom work and offers a selection of wedding-appropriate necklaces, earrings, and even hairpins. Gems and color schemes are matched to the season, and collections are ideal for brides and bridesmaids.
Lenart's homey store doubles as workroom, meaning she’s often on hand to fill you in on the properties of the stone you're eyeing.
